Hawkins Nonstick Appe Pan with Glass Lid, 22 cm, 12 Cups (NAPE22G) – Pressure Die-Cast, German 3-Coat PFOA-Free Nonstick, Ceramic Outer for Appe, Paniyaram, Bonda & Snacks

About This Product

Sunday morning appe with coconut chutney. A plate of crisp, golden ponganalu for an evening snack. Paneer kebabs made in minutes for an unexpected guest. Vegetable Manchurian balls without the deep frying. Chocolate walnut muffins that come out perfectly round without an oven. All of these — and more — are within easy reach when you have the Hawkins Nonstick Appe Pan (NAPE22G) in your kitchen. With 12 cups, each perfectly rounded and 25 ml in volume, this is the appe pan for when you are making enough for the whole family in one go. Made using pressure die-cast technology, coated inside with a German 3-coat PFOA-free nonstick that is engineered to last, and finished on the outside with a striking German ceramic coating that is both stain-resistant and good-looking, the NAPE22G is a thoughtfully built snack pan that earns its place in your kitchen every time guests arrive or a snack craving strikes.

The foundation of the NAPE22G's cooking performance is its pressure die-cast aluminium construction. Die-casting is a precision manufacturing process where molten aluminium is forced into a complex mould under pressure, creating a finished piece that has metal distributed exactly where it is structurally and thermally needed. For an appe pan, this is particularly important: the individual cup wells need to be deep and evenly shaped, the walls between cups need to be strong enough to prevent warping over repeated high-heat sessions, and the base of each cup needs to be thick enough to heat evenly without creating hotspots that burn the bottom of each ball while the sides remain undercooked. The die-cast process achieves all of this in a body that is strong and heats evenly, yet surprisingly light and easy to handle. The 3 mm body thickness throughout ensures consistent, balanced heat across all 12 cups simultaneously.

The inner German 3-coat nonstick surface is not a single-layer application but a three-layer PFOA-free coating system — each layer adding depth, durability, and food-release performance. Three coats means the nonstick surface is significantly more resistant to wear from daily use, spatula contact, and repeated heating than a single or dual-coat alternative. The outer German ceramic coating in the pan's signature red finish is both decorative and functional — it gives the NAPE22G its distinctive appearance while being resistant to staining and easy to wipe clean after cooking. The integrated bracket-cum-flame guard handle is a clever design — the bracket structure keeps the handle from loosening over time (a common failure point in cheaper appe pans), while the flame guard protects the handle from direct heat exposure, keeping it cool enough to grip safely throughout cooking. The included toughened glass lid and wooden remover tool complete a practical, well-considered package from Hawkins.

Key Features

Pressure Die-Cast Technology – Strong, Even-Heating & Light

Pressure die-casting forces molten aluminium into a precision mould under high pressure, creating a complex, accurately shaped pan body where metal thickness is optimised for structural strength and thermal performance at every point. For an appe pan, this means: uniformly shaped cups for consistent cooking across all 12 wells, walls that do not warp or deform under repeated high-heat sessions, and a base-to-cup transition that conducts heat into each cup evenly. The result is a pan that is stronger than a regular cast pan, heats more evenly, and is lighter to handle — the hallmark benefits of precision die-cast construction.

German 3-Coat PFOA-Free Nonstick – Lasts Longer, Safer to Cook In

The inner cooking surface uses a three-layer German nonstick coating system — each coat applied separately for a deeper, more durable, more food-releasing finish than a single or dual-coat surface. The coating is completely PFOA-free, meaning it contains none of the perfluorooctanoic acid compounds that have raised health concerns in older nonstick technologies. Three coats provides a meaningful durability advantage in a pan used regularly for snack-making: the surface maintains its non-stick property over significantly more cooking sessions before showing wear compared to thinner-coated alternatives.

12 Cups – Each 25ml – Full Batch for the Whole Family

With 12 individual cups, each holding 25ml, the NAPE22G lets you make a full family batch of appe, paniyaram, bonda, or muffins in a single cooking round. Twelve pieces per round means less waiting between batches when making snacks for 3–5 people, and the consistent 25ml volume per cup ensures every piece is the same size — cooking through at the same rate and coming out uniformly golden.

German Ceramic Outer Coating – Stain-Resistant & Good-Looking

The exterior of the NAPE22G is finished with a German ceramic coating in a distinctive deep red that makes the pan as presentable on a table as it is functional on the stove. The ceramic outer is inherently stain-resistant — it does not absorb turmeric, tomato, or oil staining, and wipes clean easily after cooking. The rich, even-coloured exterior maintains the pan's appearance through regular daily use without dulling or discolouring.

Integrated Bracket-cum-Flame Guard – Cool Handle That Won't Loosen

The handle design of the NAPE22G is one of its most practical engineering details. The integrated bracket-cum-flame guard serves two purposes simultaneously: the bracket structure mechanically reinforces the connection between handle and pan body, preventing the handle from loosening or detaching with repeated use — a common failure in cheaper appe pans. The flame guard portion of the design shields the handle from direct flame exposure, keeping it cool enough to hold safely throughout the cooking session.

Toughened Heat-Proof Glass Lid – See Your Food While It Cooks

The included toughened heat-proof glass lid allows you to cover the appe pan while cooking — trapping heat and steam inside each cup to cook the tops of the appe or bonda through — while maintaining full visibility of the food without needing to lift the lid. This is particularly useful for sweet appe with jaggery or muffin-style preparations that need controlled heat to cook through without burning the bottom before the top is set.

Wooden Remover Tool – Included for Safe, Easy Release

A wooden remover tool is included in the box — a dedicated implement shaped to reach into the rounded cups and lift each appe or snack ball out cleanly without damaging the nonstick surface. Using the wooden remover rather than a metal spoon protects the coating and extends the life of the nonstick surface over repeated use. The wooden material also stays cool and is comfortable to handle during cooking.

3mm Uniform Body Thickness – Even Heat Across All 12 Cups

The 3mm body thickness, maintained consistently across the pan through die-cast precision, ensures that all 12 cups heat to the same temperature at the same rate. This eliminates the frustrating situation common in cheaper appe pans where the outer cups cook faster than the inner ones — resulting in unevenly done batches where some pieces burn while others remain undercooked. With the NAPE22G, all 12 pieces cook at the same pace.

Versatile Beyond Appe – Multiple Snack Applications

The NAPE22G is named an appe pan but is genuinely a multi-snack maker. Hawkins specifically lists the following preparations that can be made in the NAPE22G: traditional appe and paniyaram from dosa/idli batter, aloo bonda, paneer kebabs, vegetable momos, chocolate walnut muffins, spicy vegetable Manchurian balls, litti (from the Litti Chokha preparation), and ponganalu. The deep, evenly shaped cups with nonstick coating handle sweet and savoury batters equally well — making it one of the most versatile small-snack cooking tools available.

Lightweight & Easy to Handle

Despite its 12-cup capacity and 22cm diameter, the die-cast NAPE22G is designed to be light and easy to handle — a deliberate outcome of the die-cast process that distributes material precisely rather than uniformly. The well-balanced handle further contributes to easy, confident handling during cooking and serving, and the compact 22cm footprint fits comfortably on any standard gas burner.

Care & Usage Instructions

Hand wash only — do not put in dishwasher. Wash with mild soap and warm water before first use. Use the included wooden remover or a silicone spatula to remove appe from cups — never use metal utensils on the nonstick surface. Use on low to medium flame — high heat is not required for the die-cast construction and may shorten the life of the nonstick coating. Do not use cooking sprays directly on the nonstick surface. After each use, allow the pan to cool before washing. Wipe dry and store in a dry place.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is an appe pan and what can I make in the Hawkins NAPE22G?

An appe pan (also called paniyaram pan, kuzhi paniyaram pan, ponganalu pan, or aebleskiver pan) is a cookware piece with multiple rounded cup-shaped wells used to make small, ball-shaped snacks and sweets. The Hawkins NAPE22G can be used to make: traditional appe and paniyaram from dosa or idli batter, aloo bonda, paneer kebabs, vegetable momos, chocolate walnut muffins, spicy vegetable Manchurian balls, ponganalu, and litti for litti chokha — a wide range of both sweet and savoury snacks across Indian regional cuisines.

2. What is pressure die-cast technology and why does it make this appe pan better?

Pressure die-casting forces molten aluminium into a precision mould under pressure, creating a finished piece with metal distributed exactly where it is needed for strength and heat conduction — and less material where it is not. For an appe pan, this means perfectly shaped, consistent cup wells, walls that resist warping under heat, and a body that heats evenly across all 12 cups while being lighter than a simple poured casting would be. It is a more complex and precise manufacturing method that results in a noticeably better-performing, longer-lasting pan.

3. Is the NAPE22G compatible with induction cooktops?

No. The NAPE22G is compatible with gas stoves only — it is not induction-compatible. The die-cast aluminium body is not magnetic, which is required for induction cooking. If you need an appe pan for an induction cooktop, look for models specifically designed with an induction-compatible base.

4. What does "German 3-coat nonstick" mean, and why is it better than a standard coating?

A German 3-coat nonstick refers to a three-layer nonstick coating system — typically a primer coat, a mid coat, and a top coat — applied in sequence to build depth and durability. More coating layers mean a thicker, more wear-resistant surface that retains its non-stick property over a significantly longer period of daily use compared to single or dual-coat alternatives. The "German" designation refers to the manufacturing origin or specification of the coating compound — associated with European standards for food-safe, high-performance nonstick technology. All three coats are PFOA-free.

5. How much oil do I need for each cup when making appe?

One of the significant advantages of the nonstick NAPE22G over a traditional iron appe pan is the dramatically reduced oil requirement. A few drops — approximately 2 to 4 drops — of oil or ghee per cup is sufficient for most preparations. The three-coat nonstick surface ensures that batter releases cleanly without sticking, even with minimal oil. This makes the NAPE22G a healthier choice for daily snack preparation compared to traditional uncoated appe pans that require a tablespoon or more of oil per cup.

6. Can I use metal spatulas or spoons in the NAPE22G?

No. The German nonstick coating should not be used with metal utensils. Metal spatulas, spoons, or skewers can scratch the coating, reducing its non-stick property and shortening its lifespan. Always use the included wooden remover or a silicone spatula to turn and remove appe from the cups. Wood and silicone are the only utensil materials recommended for use with nonstick-coated cookware.

7. Can I make sweet appe (with jaggery or banana) as well as savoury in the same pan?

Yes. The nonstick NAPE22G is equally suitable for both sweet and savoury preparations. Sweet appe with jaggery, banana, or coconut; savoury paniyaram with onion, green chilli, and curry leaves; sweet ponganalu with coconut and cardamom; or savoury Manchurian balls — all can be made in the same pan. Wash thoroughly between sweet and savoury batches if making both in the same session to prevent flavour carryover.

8. How do I use the included glass lid when making appe?

After filling the cups and the bottoms of the appe begin to set (typically 1–2 minutes on low-medium heat), place the toughened glass lid over the pan. The lid traps heat inside and creates a gentle steam environment that cooks the tops of the appe through without needing to flip them multiple times. This is particularly useful for thicker batters, sweet appe, and muffin-style preparations. The transparent glass allows you to monitor cooking without lifting the lid.

9. What is the warranty on the Hawkins NAPE22G Appe Pan?

The NAPE22G is backed by a 2-year guarantee from the date of purchase from Hawkins Cookers Limited. For any warranty or service queries, contact the Hawkins Consumer Service Manager at +91-22-2444 0807 or email service@hawkinscookers.com. Keep your guarantee card (included in the box) as proof of purchase.

10. What other appe pans are available from Hawkins?

Hawkins offers the nonstick die-cast appe pan in 20 cm with 12 cups (NAPE20G) and 22 cm with 12 cups (NAPE22G). Additionally, the Futura Cast Iron Appe Pan in 16 cm with 8 cups (CIAP16G) is available for those who prefer a traditional pre-seasoned cast iron option — naturally nonstick through seasoning, no coating, with the option to use metal skewers. The NAPE22G is the larger nonstick version, ideal when making appe for 3–5 persons in a single batch.

Nice Addition to My Kitchen

I like my new Hawkins Appe Pan, especially the glass lid. It’s useful for making appams and other snacks. The only thing I wish is that it had a slightly thicker base for better heat retention. Other than that, it performs well and the delivery was quick. Definitely a solid purchase!
